‘What is ‘Conscious Living Acupuncture?’

I’ve been spending some time thinking about how I want to be spending my time.  Partly because I have been doing this acupuncture game for some sixteen years now and don’t want to get stale but also because I spend a great deal of my work time supporting others to do the same and enjoy it, immensely.

Using acupuncture as a tool for health and wellbeing is very well accepted,  now.  It wasn’t so much when I first started out.  It is much more common place and ‘normal’ these days.  God forbid anyone should strive for normal!  Due to the fact we are complex creatures, it is quite usual to end up having a serious rummage around other people’s lives in the process of helping them move forward, physically, emotionally or even spiritually during an acupuncture treatment.

Often, folks arrive here with a bad back or a pain of some sort and we have to spend time working out the what’s, the where’s and the why’s.  It is not unusual to end up talking about all kinds of personal issues other than their pain in an attempt to figure out a suitable treatment plan.

I was trained to listen first, ask questions as appropriate and work with the patient to build rapport, trust and a reciprocal working arrangement to get them results, with needles involved at some point (ahem).  Reflective practice is key.  Taking time to think about why we ended up with a pain or an ache can reveal all kinds of reasons, causes, possibilities and therefore potential solutions

I must have worked with thousands of patients, doing hundreds of thousands of treatments, with millions of needles.  I did sit and work it all out once but I lost the notes I made, so these are guesstimates.

To get to my point, at this stage in my ‘career’ I am looking to encourage patients to join me in what I am going to label as ‘Conscious living treatments.’

What is that?

It means, if you are looking to reflect on your life, your path, your journey, then maybe consider using me and my acupuncture as a tool for doing so.

Acupuncture is about much more than just pain and for that fact, needles.  It is also about the conversation, the suggestions, the reflection, the journey, the path and the way we want to live our lives with richness and fulfilment.

Ancient acupuncture, as developed by the Chinese, holds the Tao at the centre of acupuncture treatment.  The Tao or ‘path of life’ is discernibly different for each of us but it also holds many common themes to guide us.  Acupuncture was meant to be a practical treatment that assists us each access our own unique Tao.  It should enable us to express who we are for the benefit of ourselves and those around us.  It is about being authentic and true to ourselves whilst also respecting others and the planet we are sitting on.

Ancient texts, such as the Tao de Ching, were written to act as route guides  in this self expression and acupuncture was a very real method by which we could seek this path.

How?

Acupuncture helps tune us back to our very core energy.  It refreshes our unique energy maps that lie deep within us and helps creates space for these energies to feed out into the world via our thoughts, actions and deeds.

All very lofty stuff.  In simple terms, which I prefer and actually so do Toaists, acupuncture provides a chance to talk, review, think, set a plan, relax, listen and then act.  It creates space in our day for our minds to focus solely on ourselves and allows us to calmly view what can often go unseen in our busy days. It is a magical tool that can help us find, maintain, enhance and forge our own paths.  This thrills me.  I love seeing this take shape for people and I want to do more of it.

So, basically, I am setting out my store or, rather refreshing my store’s offering and saying if this sounds like something you or someone you know would be interested in, then I would love to hear from you.

Bad backs will always be with us, but we can make sure they become opportunities for meaningful change, rather than just a pain in the ass.
